Colony strengthens Sydney leadership with Ben Coulson and Lu Vardy

Independent agency group Colony is accelerating its Sydney growth, tapping the experience of Ben Coulson as Creative Partner and Lu Vardy as Strategy Partner.

Coulson and Vardy team up with Managing Partner Dominic Walsh and Group Account Director May Graff as Colony continues to build its Sydney leadership team and expand its national presence.

This reflects Colony’s New World approach to building capability, connecting clients with senior specialists and proven leaders through a flexible model that combines entrepreneurial thinking, deep expertise and hybrid ways of working. The model allows Colony to assemble tailored teams around client challenges, regardless of geography or traditional agency structures.

Colony Founder and Executive Director Matt McCarthy said the partnerships represent an important milestone in the agency’s long-term Sydney strategy.

“We’ve been deliberate about Sydney. We wanted to bring together the right people and build from there. When you combine the experience of Ben and Lu with Dom and May, you’ve got a seriously strong leadership team with the ambition to build something different.”

Coulson brings one of Australia’s most accomplished creative careers, having held senior creative leadership roles including ANZ Chief Creative Officer positions at Dentsu, McCann, Clemenger and VML. His experience spans categories and brands across Australia and New Zealand.

Vardy, an awarded strategist, has almost three decades of experience across brand, communications and customer experience strategy, including senior roles with Virgin TBWA, Y&R and McCann. Her experience spans technology, financial services, government, health, placemaking and major consumer brands.

Colony continues to grow nationally, with 145 people across its offices and specialist businesses. The group’s capabilities now span strategy, creative, media, digital, customer experience, technology and AI.

Colony established its Sydney operation under Walsh and has continued to build momentum through its first year, including securing Fujifilm’s B2B business.

Coulson said the opportunity to help shape a modern independent agency group was a key reason for joining Colony.

“The industry is being tipped upside down right now. I want to make the kind of work needed for the new world. Colony is well placed for that, with real scale and capability combined with the pace and flexibility of an ambitious independent.”

Vardy said Colony’s model creates closer connections between senior practitioners and client challenges.

“Colony’s model puts experienced people closer to the problem, helping unpack client challenges on a deeper level to develop enduring strategies. That approach sits at the heart of Colony’s Futures Thinking model.”

McCarthy said Colony’s ambition is to build an Australian independent challenger with the scale and capability to compete with major agency groups while maintaining the agility, entrepreneurial mindset and hands-on client focus of an independent business.

The group expects to make further announcements in the coming months as it continues to invest in people, capabilities and its presence across key Australian markets.
